Tall but tiny two-bedroom home in the Australian bush

Standing nearly twice as tall as it is wide, this tiny house is more like a tiny tower. Located in the Blue Mountains, the home is the passion project of owners Lisa and Matt.

Before the pair became a couple, Matt was already searching for property in the bush, while Lisa had become obsessed with a television program on tiny homes and dreamed of owning a cosy space that was all hers. In other words, they were a dream romantic and real estate match.

Once they decided they wanted to settle down together in the bush just beyond greater Sydney, Matt and Lisa designed their very own 2.4m-wide and 4.3m-tall tiny home, and are now partners in their own tiny home building company, Tailored Tiny Co., based in the Blue Mountains.

“We both contributed to the design,” Lisa says about creating their home. “We put our heads together and decided what’s important in a home and prioritised those things from the start.”

“Matt (who runs the on-ground renovation side of the business) is very handy and can build things quite quickly and easily,” she adds. “He has an incredible knack for envisioning what he wants and explaining it.”

The building process was extremely quick and seamless, with Lisa and Matt starting the home in August 2018 and moving in only three months later.

The first hurdle, however, was finding a balance between Matt and Lisa’s vastly different interior styles.

“Matt and I have very different tastes in interior design. He’s very modern, whereas I’m a bit more Hamptons or coastal-chic,” Lisa explains. “So, we had to find a compromise that made us both feel comfortable.”

Despite these contrasting tastes, the result is effortlessly cool. Chic black exterior matches sleek appliances and the simple lines of the interior serve to maximise a sense of space.

Fun and warmth come from a unique mix of accents and décor, including gorgeous decorative feature lights, indoor greenery and even the couple’s collection of books.

A shared favourite feature of the tiny home is the recycled timber hardwood floor, sourced from historic industrial sites of inner west Sydney.

“The recycled hardwood timber flooring we put down came out of a factory in Redfern,” she says. “We then cut and made smaller pieces to create a feature wall.

“It’s so nice breaking up all the black with the warmth of the timber, and because it’s all Australian hardwood, it has so much character and texture.”

Matt and Lisa also added a decorative touch to the flooring through the rippled joining of the floorboards with the tiles in the bathroom.

Despite being a small space, the tall building accommodates two loft bedrooms, a kitchen, bathroom, living space and plenty of secret storage, including stair drawers and an under-bed unit.

The space is tied together by plenty of natural light, improved by a series of innovative, switch-controlled skylights.

The couple can play music as loud as they like with a good seven hectares of bushland extending beyond the property. A cute little patio, equipped with outdoor furniture and shading, allows them to take in the exquisite views of the Blue Mountains natural bushland from their own doorstep.
