The rise of the 'cosy' bedroom: How to get this season's hottest style

When it comes to bedrooms, there is a right way and wrong way to go about the styling — the cosier, the better.

The bedroom is one of the most sacred spaces in the entire home. It's a place of rest and rejuvenation. Plus, if styled correctly, it's a room that can add value to your home, says stylist Catherine Hegarty.

"We know that the more bedrooms the better when buying a home," Catherine shares.

"But we also know people appreciate a desirable bedroom that feels luxurious and nice, not necessarily one that’s bigger."

So, if you’re looking to add warmth to your bedroom, or are working with limited space, dial up the cosy factor with these expert styling tips.

Choose a centrepiece bed

The bed is the focal point of your bedroom, so think carefully about the type of bed frame, materials, colours and dimensions.

Catherine says choosing the bed first helps set the foundations for your styling theme. From a sophisticated wooden timber frame to a plush upholstered bed that oozes luxury, there's plenty of thematic options to explore.

But while you may want to make a big style statement with a stand-out centrepiece bed, make sure it also ticks the boxes for functionality and coziness.

"There are so many beautiful, comfortable options out there, so you don't need to sacrifice comfort just for a nice-looking bed," Catherine explains.

"If you have a small space, a double bed is a great option as this still gives you room to walk around comfortably, and the bed won't overwhelm the space."

"Some beds also offer built-in storage underneath for items you don't use all the time. These are also really good for small spaces and are quite popular."

Catherine also says that part of picking the perfect bed is also picking the perfect mattress, an element that is key "to a good night’s rest".

Try before you buy at your local Snooze store and chat with one of the specially trained staff who can assist in finding the perfect mattress. Or, take the mattress quiz online to find out if you prefer a firm, medium or plush mattress.

Pick the right-sized furniture

Bedrooms come in all shapes and sizes, so consider the layout of your room when choosing furniture.

"If you have a really big room, you’ll want really oversized furniture that fills the space," Catherine says. "That way, it won't look like everything is floating around in there."

Try a statement headboard and bedside tables. Also, consider adding a sitting nook, rugs or ottomans if you’ve got the space.

Catherine says if it's a small room, think of innovative options, like tall boys and storage beds. Make sure you declutter to maximise space.

Think about lighting

For a room where sleep is the goal, ceiling lighting is often unnecessarily bright. Limit overhead lights and instead use a variety of smaller lamps set at varying heights for an ambient mood-enhancing vibe.

Tip: Low-wattage, warm-coloured bulbs will help soften the light throughout the room for maximum cosiness.

Use colour to make the space more restful

The old rule for bedroom styling was to opt for whites, warm greys and blue tones to help create a sleepy environment — but not anymore.

"A lot of people are steering away from the whites and the blues," Catherine says. "Instead, people are exploring earthy colours with lots of browns and greens."

Tip: Keep it colourful but calm — avoid really bright and bold colours.

Add plenty of layers

"You don't want to be minimalist in the bedroom," says Catherine. "Adding different levels of texture will make it much more comfortable. Things like rugs, blankets, pillows and artwork."

For your bed, she suggests an eye-catching bedspread, with premium linen sheets and liberal use of cushions.

To top it off, look around the room and see what you can add. For luxury, stick to furniture that’s made from natural materials, like linen lamp shades and rattan furniture. Also, consider wallpaper to really add oomph to a space.

Tip: Avoid hard and sharp reflective metal sculptures. Plus, stay away from things made of plastic that can feel manufactured and cheap.
