In this week’s episode of In My Place, we step inside a light, bright, fresh haven in Sydney’s South Caringbah – the beautiful home of Catherine Heraghty.

A woman of many talents, Catherine is an interior stylist and owner and founder of boutique styling company, The Stables.

Catherine has also – very recently – added another new hat as a homewares designer. She’s launched a new, bespoke cushion collection that she began to develop 12 months ago, in collaboration with an Aussie textile designer.

“There are 11 pieces in the range and they’re all designed in Australia and made overseas. The aesthetic is simple and understated with soft, muted colours that won’t date. I don’t like things that are strongly trend driven. My style is very timeless,” says Catherine.

Catherine has a background in property styling and wanted to create a range of cushions that would work seamlessly together.

This seamless approach to style is what resonates in her own digs, a place that evokes Scandinavian influences at every turn. “The most common words I use at home are clean, light, bright and fresh.”

Catherine’s favourite things

Here, we put the spotlight on a few of Catherine’s fave pieces, so you can politely steal her pared-back Scandi style.

Five minutes with Catherine

My biggest indulgence in the home is…

Buying Australian-made products. The quality is always fantastic and I also love the Australian aesthetic. My favourite Australian brand is Jardan.

My favourite bargain piece is…

Once upon a time, art wasn’t very affordable and there was so little to choose from – unless you had a huge budget and could head to the galleries. These days, anyone can purchase prints at an affordable price. One of my favourites is Kate from Yorkelee. She creates gorgeous pieces of art that I hang in my home.

The part of the home I still want to work on is…

We’re currently toying with the idea of knocking our current house down and rebuilding. I’m really excited about the possibility of building my own home from scratch!

The room that gets the most use is…

Our lounge room – it’s where it all happens. We eat here, my two-year-old son Hudson plays here, we watch TV and this is where we go when friends drop in.

I go here to relax…

My bedroom! There’s no TV and no distractions. I love to come in here on my own, lay on the bed, read and just get away from the noise. I love the peace and quiet, but I still like to be able to hear my husband and son nearby so it’s perfect for me.

If we called this beautiful home our own, we’d be all smiles, too. Picture: Julie Crespel

The unexpected place we enjoy eating is…

The lounge. My husband and I lead such hectic lives that we like to relax as soon as Hudson is in bed.

The most frequently used pieces of kitchenware are…

Probably my bread board. I received a really good-quality bread board as a wedding present from my mum and it stays on my kitchen bench. We prepare food on it several times a day and all it needs is a little oiling every now and then to bring it back.
